Rev. January 14, 2008

CASA of Morris and Sussex Counties, Inc. is one of more than 900 programs in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U. S. Virgin Islands. New programs are started at a rate of three or four each month.

Preliminary findings show that children who have been assigned a CASA volunteer tend to spend less time in court and less time within the foster care system than those who do not have CASA representation. Children with CASA representation also have better chances of finding permanent homes than children who lack CASA representation.

While there are other child advocacy organizations, CASA is the only program in which trained volunteers are appointed by the Court to represent the child's best interests. Volunteer advocates are at least 21 years of age.

For these reasons, CASA is endorsed nationally by the American Council of Family Court Judges, by the American Bar Association and by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention of the U. S. Department of Justice. CASA programs in New Jersey are authorized by Court Rule 5:8C, adopted September 1998 by the Judicial System-Chancery Division, Family Part.

The National CASA Association is a non-profit organization that provides training, technical assistance, research, media and public awareness services to local CASA programs.

CASA of Morris and Sussex Counties, Inc. is a private non-profit agency that receives funding solely from private foundations, from the State of New Jersey through CASA of New Jersey, Inc. and from generous donations by local businesses and community members.
